Summer Harvest
Dear Editor: Southeast Alaska Independent Living and the Living with the Land 4H Club would like to thank the Extended School Year program and Youth Advocates of Sitka for providing staff and resources for students to attend the Summer Harvest collaborative youth camp.
Participants picked salmonberries, brined salmon, gardened, and prepared salmonberry crisp and smoked salmon dip. Thank you, Laura and Claire at St. Peter’s Fellowship Farm, for hosting us. The next collaborative youth camp will be a week of kayaking July 11-15. If you would like to volunteer, or provide kayaks, call Claire at 747-6859, or Molly at 747-7509.

Many Thanks
Dear Editor: I want to say thank you to a wonderful group of young people from the Nazarene Church in Phoenix, Arizona, who are here for the week to lead the vacation Bible school in the evening at the local Nazarene Church 5:30 to 8 p.m. for ages 3 through sixth grade.
During the day they are washing windows, cutting overgrown brush and various projects for the local congregation.
They have done a very good job at my place today.

Science Camps
Dear Editor: The Sitka Sound Science Center summer science camps are in full swing and support from community members who lend their expertise, time and energy has made them truly successful.
Recently, 20 kids fully enjoyed a week of summer camp called “Strong and Fast” at the Sitka Sound Science Center. Highlights of the camp included a visit to the radiology department at Sitka Community Hospital and the opportunity to learn the assessment skills of a physical therapist.
Many thanks to Amy Martens, Cara Lawrie and Mike Johnson at Sitka Community Hospital for such interesting tours of the lab equipment and images associated with radiology. All the campers left with memorable new understandings. Later in the week, Bridgette Hitchcock from Oceanside Physical Therapy walked all campers through steps for assessing function and mobility. She organized equipment and instruction so that every camper was able to actively experience physical therapist skills and it was fun!
We all benefited from the generous donation of time from Amy, Cara, Mike and Bridgette. The Sitka Sound Science Center and the campers from “Strong and Fast” are very appreciative of these representatives from our health community!
We’d also like to thank funders from Alaska Airlines and Sitka Alaska Permanent Charitable Trust for financial support.
