Dear Editor: Thanks a million for your parade coverage, especially the photo of our student, Destony Rosas, who performed admirably as Katniss Everdeen in our float this year. You had everything right, except Destony was representing UAS, not the arts camp.
We felt honored that our float was just in front of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. We were shooting a spot that will soon appear in the previews in the Coliseum Theaters, and the footage of Destony with the backdrop of enthusiastic musicians, dancers, and acrobats of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp made a perfect setting for our film.
Why our ‘‘Hunger Games’’ theme? Because the movie byline is “May the odds be ever in your favor” — a very good reason for our Sitka Start program. College is often a lot like the hunger games — a struggle to survive.
There are so many unexpected challenges, and even our friends can be less than helpful in meeting the goal of survival. Often, students return after their first year, loaded with debt and with little to show for it. So our message with Sitka Start is: why not spend your first year of college right here in Sitka? Live at home, in familiar surroundings, and for a fraction of the cost of going away to school, develop good habits, get a year of credits, discover what interests you … and most important, gain confidence for the future. Whether you transfer within UAS or the UA system, or go to another school entirely, a Sitka Start can be a smart start.
Thanks so much for correcting the little mistake in your coverage!
