Reuse Letter Response
Dear Editor: The following is a response to a letter in the May 30 Sitka Sentinel:
I recently donated four aluminum airplane wings to the Baranof Barracudas Swim Club. While I could have reused them for a number of projects, I decided to support our local swimming organization. They were my wings, so their disposal was my choice. Once I gave them to BBSC, that choice became theirs. These wings were taken from BBSC for the personal gain of an individual.
I support BBSC’s requiring the return of or payment for the items I gave them. In the past I have purchased items from BBSC that I could reuse and found the charges at scrap rate to be very reasonable. BBSC makes no profit. They work to sell what is donated to maintain the swim program. Whether the aluminum is sold to someone local or is shipped out of town is immaterial. The help to BBSC is in the sale of the donation.
BBSC’s gathering of aluminum donations lets you get something from giving, even if what you give has no value to you. For decades they have provided one means for us to reduce our waste. People that donate aluminum to BBSC can know they are supporting a worthwhile organization while reducing their landfill impact.
