Homelessness

Dear Editor: The Sitka Coalition for Homelessness hosted a presentation by Housing First, a Juneau homeless program supported by recent longitudinal effectiveness studies. Housing First reported success in organizing, building and operating community supported homeless facilities, with support services for the kinds of challenges facing adults who are homeless. Sitka Coalition on Homelessness adapts many of Juneau’s concepts to our local needs.

I previously voiced objections to the cost and to the lack of transitional services in the original Sitka for Community housing plans. The current document includes a Preferred Option for Small, Unattached Bedroom Units with a Communal Facility including shared showers, laundry, kitchen and restrooms. I support this concept, with the caveat that no security is provided against access by unauthorized non residents. This excellently conceived project will be located at the head of Jarvis Street. The plan reflects cost effectiveness.

I heartily commend the Sitka Homeless Coalition in their thoughtful and comprehensive approach to taking on Sitka’s problem with homelessness.
