Only Fools Run
Dear Editor: Southeast Alaska Independent Living staff and consumers would like to extend a BIG thanks to all who participated in SAIL’s 10th Annual Only Fools Run at Midnight!!!
People came dressed in fantastic, creative costumes ready to run for a good cause. All proceeds will go directly back to improve independence for people with disabilities and seniors in Sitka. A huge thank you goes out to our incredibly generous sponsors for their donations. Thanks also to the Sitka police and public works who helped keep everyone safe. A special thanks to the fire department and crew for allowing us to take over their fire hall for the event. Also, we’d like to give a big thanks to Phyllis Hackett who did a fabulous job emceeing all night, to Steve Warren for sound and to our amazing race director Arron Routen. Thanks to all volunteers, donors, participants, and to the wonderful people of Sitka. Check out our Facebook for some great photos. You all are amazing!

Medvejie Run Thanks
Dear Editor: A big thanks to everyone who participated in the Medvejie half-marathon, 10K and 5K. Great turnout and excellent weather. Thank you Sitka Mountain Rescue, Shawn McLeod and crew, Tristan Vancise, Kristy Totten, Mary Beth Nelson, Terry and Jan Lovett, Gina Lawson, Chris Horan and all of our sponsors, including Neurobehavorial Consultants, Foreign Automotive, Brad Shaffer, CPA, Schmolck Mechanical and Christine Harrington, CPA. None of this would be possible without everyone’s help. This year was our first time starting at Herring Cove and I think general consensus is to keep it there.

Recycling Program
Dear Editor: If you have been to the recycling center recently, we’re sure you will have noticed the changes instituted by the City of Sitka Public Works Department. The center looks orderly and the plastic collection area is especially clean. Our hats go off to the city for moving the recycling program forward.
As with any part of the recycling program its eventual success rests with the community members who use the center. It is essential to the success of the program that Sitkans follow the rules and do not contaminate the containers. Plastic is especially susceptible to contamination by placing plastic in the wrong bag.
There is much to be done to grow our recycling program in the future and we hope the city will continue to refine and grow the current program. The steps recently taken are important and necessary.
Our committee recognizes and applauds the work of the City and Stragier Sanitation.
