SHARKs Event
Dear Editor: The SHARKs had fun over last weekend! Sitka Ham Amateur Radio Klub had a very successful first annual Field Day Event.
Field Day is a 24-hour exercise, officiated by the American Radio Relay League, that simulates a disaster and/or emergency situation with alternative power for communications (generator, battery or solar).
We had 35 confirmed radio communication contacts throughout the United States plus Canada and Japan.
We want to thank everyone for coming out to participate or simply coming to observe and see what it was all about.
We had great weather and a great time.
SHARK would like to thank Sitka Sportsman’s Association for letting us use their facility for the event.
Also Sitka Bottling Co. Scott and Bob for donating water and sodas, Pizza Express Hector for supplying the pizzas for the Saturday night dinner.
Another big thanks to Raven KCAW, KIFW and KSBZ radio stations for giving us the great on the air promotion for our event.
Now it’s time to start planning for our Second Annual Field Day Event that will take place June 23-24, 2018.
Darryl Ault, SHARK President

Fools Run Thank You
Dear Editor: Raven Radio would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Only Fools Run at Midnight! There were about 200 Fools running, walking and rolling through Sitka Saturday night and it was a super success. 5k winners were Mateo Bailey and Molly Sitter in the youth category; Jordan Zellhuber and Erin Wallace in the adult category; and Fr. Andy Sensenig Omi and Mary Barrett in the masters category.
Wackiest Centipede first prize went to the giant Octopus created by students of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, and second place went to a gaggle of Royal Fools. Best costumes went to a well-fed shark, a giant baby, and a GhostBuster and her ghost.
Thanks to the Mean Queen for providing prizes, Yellow Jersey Cycle Shop for the racing bibs, Joe Montagne, Ed Littlefield and SFAC friends for the live and lively music, Steve Warren for the sound system, and Kelsie Barbour and Clair Sanchez for co-emceeing with panache! Also a big thank you to Harrigan Centennial Hall and staff for hosting the Fools, and the Sitka Police Department and the City of Sitka for support. Thanks to Emily Kwong for photos.
