Local high school basketball teams won their first games Thursday and advanced in the State Championship tournament up north, in the Mat-Su valley.

Led by Jocelyn Brady with 18 points, Sitka High’s Lady Wolves earned a 57-27 win over Kenai High School in Palmer. The Sitka squad plays again today, against Monroe Catholic in Wasilla.

On the boys side, the Mt. Edgecumbe High Braves notched a clean 68-35 victory against Kotzebue. As usual, Edgecumbe senior RJ Alstrom-Beans led his team’s scoreboard with 23 points, followed by Ranen Wassillie with 14. The Braves face the formidable Anchorage Christian School team tonight in Wasilla.
