Democratic Caucus
Dear Editor: This year, as I watch the press coverage of the Democratic caucuses and primaries, I am struck by the tremendous turnout of young people across the country. Young people in Sitka who would like to participate in the caucus process should know that they can become a registered voter if they are 18 years old within 90 days of completing the registration form. That means for Sitka’s Democratic caucus on March 26, at 9:30 a.m., at the Swan Lake Senior Center, you can participate if you will turn 18 before June 26.
Anyone can register to vote at the caucus or at the Sitka Legislative Information Office located at 201 Lake Street, next to AT&T. Tell them that I sent you.

Sitka Youths
Dear Editor: Sitka is a place we all can be what it is that we are, also if there are things we need to change (within ourselves), we are given the space. Without taking things personal, I have been able to gravitate to that which I secretly love most. So I would like to say that I am given room by many in this town to learn so much of the endless journey of life itself. Hank’s Cabs’ mission is to enhance the light that is already here.
A year ago I went to Idaho with the Blatchley Middle School jazz band and I want to say I was so proud to be with the students, I wanted to let everybody know that I was with them. I wanted so bad to go to every parent and let them know how honored I was to be part of that ordeal. I just didn’t want to appear as being weird. The group of students I was with, while we were walking to the student union to shop, saw a lady pushing a rack of garments down the sidewalk. Anyway, the rack hit a deep crack in the sidewalk, just as it was tilting over, every student in my group reacted to catch the rack. Not one garment hit the ground and the response was incredible.
That was one of the peak moments of my trip and of course the performances were great. I can’t remember how many moments on that trip there was something going on that made me feel so proud of being involved with being a chaperone. All I know is, I told myself when I get back to Sitka I need to work harder at freeing up some time so I could get back involved with life on a level that recreates the place I was that weekend with the students.
I also wished I could have shared this earlier; however, I would like to say whenever I am feeling down in Sitka because of the rain and clouds, all I need to do is look up. Even on rainy, foggy and cloudy days this place can be breathtaking.
Oh, before I close this note to the readers, the parents in this town are some of the greatest. There is so much I have learned about being there unconditionally, just seeing different approaches to child-rearing. What everybody has in common, (there are so many tricks and strategies that are used to produce the same results) we are all wanting a world for our children and people we love so deeply to live in that is safe.
From a gentle spirit of Hank’s Cabs

Quilter’s Auction
Dear Editor: The Ocean Wave Quilt Guild would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all who helped make our 18th Annual Scholarship Auction our most successful fundraiser yet!
We would like to thank Claire Sanchez at Raven Radio, Sitka Sentinel, and KIFW for helping us get the word out. Jill Scheidt at Abby’s for creating an eye catching window display. And James Poulson for always being ready with his camera.
Twenty-eight miniature quilts were featured in our auction this year. Guild members also donated numerous items for the Silent Auction and Outcry portion of our event. While other members including Megan Pasternak, Linda Swanson, Sabrina Jenkins, Margie Esquiro, Marie Murray, Sabra Jenkins, Mary Levesque, and Karen Boyer worked to keep it all running smoothly.
Mostly we are grateful to you, our community, for attending and supporting our event. Thanks to all who donated, attended, and purchased, over $3,000 was once again raised to be given in scholarships to Sitka students; both at the high school level for two graduating seniors, and at the elementary level through the Fine Arts Camp.
