Hospital Property

Dear Editor: I was dismayed to see that the proposed sale of the Sitka Community Hospital property to SEARHC would not come to a vote, but rather two public hearings would be held instead of putting the sale up for an advisory vote of the public. Assemblyman Thor Christianson, as quoted in the Sentinel March 10, stated, ‘‘that in past a binding vote would have been required for large sales of city property.’’ I am hoping that this issue can still be decided in a vote of the public. After all, it is our property.

It is unfortunate that this item is called ‘‘hospital sale,’’ as if there were no other alternatives. Let’s rename it ‘‘SCH property retention.’’ This municipal property is situated in a very significant and strategic location. It is in an extremely valuable central part of the municipality, and the community of Sitka. The property is large, located near the ball fields, commercial centers, two schools, residential areas, the skate park, and Eliason Harbor. Once the five-year lease is up with SEARHC, the hospital building could be repurposed into a community center, and house any number of services; or renew the lease, as desired. This property is an important part of the footprint of the City of Sitka, and we mustn’t diminish our holdings, rather grow and utilize them for the betterment of our town, and the lives of our children and grandchildren. Once, were it to be sold, it is gone forever. This municipal property should never be sold but should pass on into perpetuity as a piece of our city’s history, heritage and infrastructure.

I realize it is very short notice, but please let your voice be heard on this issue tomorrow, March 16, 6 p.m. at Harrigan Centennial Hall in person, or via Zoom.

We need a vote!

SAFV Benefit

Dear Editor: Sitkans Against Family Violence had a great experience offering an online dessert auction. Sitka bakers pledged and delivered 27 fabulous desserts, and friends from Sitka and out of state enjoyed the three-day bidding period with fun and enthusiasm. This was a very successful fundraiser and we thank all who participated from the depth of our hearts.

All donations received support SAFV’s mission to advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault while working to prevent it before it ever starts. Anyone who has a question on an issue in this field is welcome to call SAFV at 907-747-3370 or send a text to 907-623-7820. Our prevention department works with children and youths giving them skills and empowerment to change their own habits aimed to eventually make Sitka a community without violence.

As always, we are humbled by the generosity of our community. Thanks, again, and Gunalchéesh.
