Only in Sitka
Dear Editor: Last Saturday, with the help of my new red walker, I was on my way up Lincoln Street to pick up a prescription at the pharmacy. I live in the Pioneers Home, so it was just a short walk. The day was cloudy, grey and dreary, and so was I.
All of a sudden a pretty little girl came skipping past me. She stopped and smiled and asked me how my day was going. She was like a beautiful ray of sunshine. My frown turned upside down and became a smile. We chatted a few moments and she continued on her way, but not before I asked her name. Her name is Awesome! What a perfect name for a perfectly awesome little girl!
Thanks for stopping, Awesome, you made my day.

Thank You, White E
Dear Editor: On behalf of Sitka’s senior citizens, we wish to thank our friends at the Sitka White Elephant Shop Inc. for their sustained and unfailing generous support of the Swan Lake Senior Center programs. Their FY16 annual financial support allows the senior center to continue providing hot, nutritious meals to Sitka’s seniors five-days per week.
Thank you, Sitka residents, for shopping at the “White E.” Your support of the White Elephant Shop helps them pay-it-forward by supporting the Swan Lake Senior Center with meaningful financial support.

Islam in Schools
Dear Editor: Alaska Statue 14 03090 states “Partisan, sectarian, or denominational doctrines may not be advocated in a public school during the hours the school is in session. A teacher or school board violating this section may not receive state money.”
For several years I have opposed promoting Islam in Sitka schools. The large creation and presentation of the tenants of Islam at Blatchley Middle School is certainly inappropriate and possibly illegal. Sitka School Board President Tim Fulton stated that he saw no evidence of Sitka Schools promoting Islam. Yet, had there been a large Christian display of the theology of Jesus Christ crucified he would have “seen” that! It is recognized; students do not go to public school to be indoctrinated in any one world religion and Sitka School District needs to abide by that and drop the promotion of Islam.
