More Dam Comments

Dear Editor: Clyde Bright is right on. Those of us who know the difference between a BTU and kilowatt and horsepower understand the picture of staff celebrating dam contractor’s success as pouring salt on the wounds of our enterprise fund monopoly. Those of us without a government protected retirement are hoping selling water to thirsty 1-percenters will ease the choke Sitka feels from no vote.

Call me if you wish to discuss, 738-7889.

Scott Saline, Sitka

CTF Town Hall

Dear Editor: At 6 p.m. Monday evening at UAS, the Citizen’s Task Force will host a town hall meeting to present its work and findings to the community. The meeting will also be broadcast live on KCAW.

The CTF was commissioned by the Assembly last year to develop recommendations on City and Borough of Sitka core services, fees and revenues. Further, it was asked to consider how to make our taxes and fees more equitable and to do this with long-term sustainability as the goal. This has proved to be a monumental assignment. Since our first meeting, the CTF has met fourteen times and expended over 30 hours in meetings. (Our work products can be viewed at the city website: http://www.cityofsitka.com/government/clerk/boards/info/ctf/CitizensTaskforceonCityServices.html).

On Monday evening, we are very eager to hear from our friends and neighbors. Is the removal of sales tax on groceries and a $2 million subsidization of the electric fund to reduce future rate increases a fair trade for asking our citizens to approve a 2 mill property tax increase? Should we return city streets to gravel in order to save money? Do you support cuts in city services and school district funding to help balance the budget? Your participation in this critical discussion is very important as it will help inform the final report which will be presented to the Assembly April 12.

Looking forward to seeing you Monday night.

Max Rule, Vice Chair,

Citizen’s TaskForce
