AmeriCorps Week
Dear Editor: AmeriCorps Week is an opportunity for Sitka AmeriCorps members to demonstrate AmeriCorps impact in Sitka, and to thank the community partners who make Sitka AmeriCorps Program possible. AmeriCorps’ Week shines a spotlight on different AmeriCorps members’ impact in our community. It is our goal to motivate more people to join AmeriCorps or to generate more volunteers in our community.
We have full-time members serving at MEHS, SSD, UAS, YAS, SCS, STA, Sitka Sound Science Center, Kettleson Library, SCAPS, Sitka Greater Arts Council and Hames Center. We invite the community to join us in celebrating the service that these members bring and to thank them when you see them. Sitka AmeriCorps will highlight different members each day next week in the paper as we celebrate the tenth annual AmeriCorps Week March 5-12.

Garbage Cans
Dear Editor: We all want to be responsible dog owners and pick up after our dogs when we walk them downtown.
There used to be two trash containers between City Hall and the Cathedral. Now there are none until one reaches the Cathedral. It would be nice to have a least one of those containers back for dog owners and others to use. Perhaps other dog owners and those who don’t like stepping around and over ‘‘dog leavings’’ could give the public works department a call to ask for the restoration of garbage cans. Tourist season will be upon us before we know it and having a clean downtown does leave a good impression with visitors.

Senate Bill 89
Dear Editor: Senate Bill 89 codifies a fundamental parental right to direct the upbringing and education of their children. Common core state standards continues the federal governments consolidation of control over public education. Facilitating this consolidation are superintendents and local school boards who are ceding control of education to the federal government. Although they lack any authority they are also ceding fundamental parental rights creating a conflict between parents and school districts. As a parent I am not ceding my fundamental right and will continue to oppose any effort to take it from me. In addition SB 89 ensures that parents teach values and parents and certified teachers teach human sexuality to our children.
