Silver Thaw and Herring
Dear Editor: Mother nature takes care of her family: this weather is her way of making sure the herring are ready to spawn. The weather gets cold so the herring are saved from anything that will get the herring eggs.
The snow, cold weather save the baby herring and the mothers till they are ready to spawn. The male fish stay away and go deep and far away till it’s good to come in.
Old time people years ago called this weather the “Silver Thaw.” Mother nature has the males come in when the eggs are ready to come out. If fishermen and others move too early, they move deep till the eggs are ready. We take care of the fish. They will stay around and they won’t be around good rules take enough or they won’t come back too hard to get. Too great more money for the fish. In a few years, no more fish. I hope they have a limit sometime. Even our fish in the summer it shows. Not too much fish being caught.
Every year the silver thaw comes, hope the fish come back. Thanks for taking this letter to write about fish. Good luck fishing.
