Student Health Fair
Dear Editor: On Saturday, March 19, the SEARHC/Mt. Edgecumbe High School Student Health Center held its annual Student Health Fair. About 350 students participated in this event where they learned about topics such as nutrition, tobacco cessation, healthy relationships, substance abuse, musculoskeletal health and dental health.
Multiple agencies put together informative, interactive, and fun displays for our students. We would like to thank SEARHC’s Pharmacy, Tobacco, Dental, Pharmacy and Nutrition programs, as well as UAA’s School of Nursing, Sitka Community Hospital, SAFV, Sitka Counseling and Prevention, Mt. Edgecumbe High School’s counseling staff, and the Sitka Youth Leadership Committee for the time, effort, and energy they put into this event.
We would also like to thank Sea Mart and Highliner Coffee for their generous donations to our student raffle.
This annual event is designed to offer up-to-date health information on topics that are relevant to teens. We could not have done this without the support of our local businesses and health care community.
Thanks, again.

Food Web Cruise
Dear Editor: The Sitka Sound Science Center had a busy weekend with two big science engagement events that could not have happened without lots of help. We were honored to have Native storyteller Chuck Miller at our Discovery Days. And, our annual Food Web Cruise fundraiser for Sitka WhaleFest occurred on Saturday.
We would like to thank Chuck Miller, youth program coordinator for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, for his engaging, informative and entertaining program last Saturday – ‘‘Storytelling and Sharing: Traditional Tlingit Herring Roe and Intertidal Food Harvesting.’’ Chuck shared traditional Tlingit stories that included ravens, salmon, and a moose as well as wisdom about how herring roe are traditionally harvested and the bounty of food that can be found in the intertidal zone right out our back door. Chuck captivated all of the guests, whether they were 3 or 73 years old. Chuck’s program was a Discovery Days special event open to the public and was part of the Sitka Herring Festival.
The Sitka Sound Science Center would like to thank all the guests and passengers who joined us on the 2016 Food Web Cruise to support our fundraising efforts for the Sitka WhaleFest! You all braved the cold, windy and rainy day and thankfully the experience of witnessing the amazing wildlife in Sitka Sound made up for the weather.
Many thanks to Old Harbor Books for helping us to sell tickets, the Hames Corporation for generously donating some of the delicious food, and Allen Marine and staff for providing the boat and making sure we returned safely! The Daily Sitka Sentinel, Raven Radio and the Sitka Chamber of Commerce generously promoted our fundraiser and we could not have had such an amazing turnout without their help.
We are grateful for many dedicated supporters of Sitka WhaleFest and board and staff at the Sitka Sound Science Center, for helping prepare for the cruise, for donating and providing a bountiful breakfast, and for the speakers who joined us to share their love and knowledge of the wildlife in Sitka Sound! Thank you to Amy Sweeney, Truman Skang, Colleen Duncan, Dana Pitts, Jan Straley, Janet Clarke, Jessica Gill, Matt Goff, Renee Tuttle, Robin Sherman and Sandy Kincheloe.
