Believe Me
Dear Editor: I am sick and tired of people criticizing President Grump for constantly lying. Don’t they know it is a pathological condition? He can’t help it. It’s a disease – liar’s disease. We should feel sorry for him. It is no different than the New York Times reporter with MS that candidate Grump made fun of during the campaign. That reporter couldn’t help having MS. Blaming our president of lying is like blaming that reporter for having MS.
Would giving him a lie-detector test be an oxymoronic waste of time? I love oxymorons, I expect a lot of them these next four years. A pathological liar just stumbles into them. He can’t help it.
However, an interesting question remains. Does he know that he is lying? Psychologists disagree on this. Either he knows he is lying or he does not. Right? But I think that at least sometimes he knows he is lying, especially when he ends his statement with ‘‘Believe me.’’ He does this speaking extemporaneously at his rallies to his minions, not when he is reading from a teleprompter or from notes, although he sometimes cannot resist the force of habit.
At any rate, our democratic experiment here in the United States is strong enough to survive a lying con-artist of a president. Believe me. What could possibly go wrong?

Hoop Time Champs
Dear Editor: Our Sitka D (fourth/fifth grades) girls basketball team just came back from Juneau placing first at Hoop Time. They went undefeated in the tournament going 4-0.
We would like to thank our following sponsors: The Cellar, Sitka Travel, Halibut Point Marine Services, Sarah Arneson with Perfectly Posh, Sea Mart for allowing us to hold a bake sale in their lobby, American Legion, the Moose Lodge for generously holding a steak night fundraiser, and to the Nugget for donating pies to our bake sale. I cannot go without mentioning the awesome parents who helped along the way and supported the girls from baking to traveling to Juneau to cheer us on. Also, to all the family, friends, teachers (thank you, Mrs. Horton, for baked goods) aunties (thank you, Sue), grandmas (thank you, Holly Mac Arthur) and lastly, the awesome community we live in! We received numerous donations at our bake sale and we appreciate you all. Your generosity made it possible for our girls to have this amazing experience and opportunity to compete and partake in this sport they love. The longer we can engage our youth in healthy positive activities the better off we are as a community. Thank you, Sitka.
