Ventures Fees

Dear Editor: In Thursday’s paper I was referenced as seeking to raise the fees for the Ventures Program, which is not the case. It is a program I support, and critically important for working families. What I was referencing to was the continued efforts on collection of fees from those parents who still are delinquent in their monthly payments to the program.

We as a board asked for this action last year and the Ventures director and staff have been making progress. A majority of the parents utilizing the Ventures Program are in fact compliant. In these lean budget times, every dollar counts. Those delinquent payments could possibly be utilized to assist with our Internet bandwidth needs for our district, which is doing a remarkable job with that resource in our education programs. As always, we as a board welcome public and staff input as we navigate through these difficult budget challenges.

Citizens Climate Lobby

Dear Editor: Citizens Climate Lobby Sitka thanks everyone who came out for our very successful series of introductory meetings, training and public presentation last weekend. George Donart, Alaska state coordinator for CCL, met with a wide range of Sitkans, including members of the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, the Chamber of Commerce, two of our Assembly, Mt. Edgecumbe High School students, and the Unitarian Fellowship. It was wonderful to see people’s clear interest in helping to create the political will for a livable world.

CCL is a national volunteer citizen’s network working to get bipartisan, market-based legislation passed in Congress that mitigates the effects of climate change. There is now a bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus in Washington, D.C., that has 26 members, as of this week, and is growing. The caucus requires an equal number of Republicans and Democrats to join together.

We hope even more of our neighbors and friends will come out for our listening, learning and action meeting on Saturday morning, March 11. Look for our PSAs when we have details of time and place.

In the meantime, the Citizens Climate Lobby website is a great place to acquaint yourself if you weren’t able to join us: http://citizensclimatelobby.org/.

Thanks so much again to all who met with George and us and came to the presentation and training.

Libby Stortz, Michelle Putz,

Thank You, John

Dear Editor: The community of St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church would like to thank John McCrehin for his many hours of clearing the snow from the parking lot at the church this past week.

We had several special programs and services this past week to begin our season of Lent. Without a clear parking lot, we would not have been able to welcome the community to attend any of them.

With grateful hearts from all of us at St. Peter’s ... Thank you, John!
