Path of Hope

Dear Editor: Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society would like to bring attention to the Path of Hope above Moller Field to everyone in Sitka. It is an inspirational park dedicated to those who have survived cancer and other illnesses, to give hope in any and all circumstances.

This last year unfortunately there has been vandalism, not only to the grounds by pulling up plants and shrubs but to the beautiful sculpture with graffiti, benches and inspirational pages with spray painted graffiti on them plus damaging the name plates on the benches. This can only be the work of those who don’t understand how important this Park is to so many or with too much time on their hands.

Damage and destruction to public or private property should have consequences and the Board is hopeful that someone will come forward and report to the Sitka Police Department at 747-3245 if they know anything about who, what and when this vandalism was done at the Path of Hope.

Our wonderful crew of dedicated volunteers spent hours with landscaping, pressure washing, scrubbing and cleaning all the aluminum on the sculpture and pages to make our park shine once more.

When asked if they wanted to be identified, we received this very thoughtful email. “We think it’s a great idea that you put a letter to the editor in the paper about the vandalism, but as much as we appreciate your thoughts to include us, I think we would all agree that the focus of the letter is to bring attention to this amazing park the Cancer Survivor’s have provided to the community. It would be a great opportunity to draw attention to the Path of Hope, why it was started and the significance of it not only to the members of the Cancer Survivor’s but to the whole community.”

The Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society would like to say thank you to all of our volunteers for their time, talents and treasures. Without you, we would not have a well maintained park for Sitkans to visit and enjoy or be able to give out the $500 mini grants to individuals affected by cancer. Please contact one of us to receive an application and visit the Path of Hope to be inspired by its beauty.
