Dear Editor:
Signature gathering for the recall of Governor Mike Dunleavy got off to a strong and enthusiastic start last week here in Sitka. More opportunities to sign are coming up:
Today, 4:30-7:30 p.m. Beak Restaurant; and Thursday, March 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Backdoor, and 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Yellow Jersey. On Saturday, March 7, petitions may be signed 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Unitarian Church.
Volunteers also are available to take petition books to Sitkans who are homebound. For information, call Beth at 738-9942. Please sign at your earliest convenience so Alaska can move quickly to the vote and the repair of our state.
I also have a petition booklet available to sign at Precision Boatworks (222 Smith St.) during the work day. You can call me at 738-3671, to make sure I am there, before you make a trip to the shop.

AmeriCorps Sitka
Dear Editor:
My name is Megan Reid and I serve with Sitka AmeriCorps Program at Blatchley Middle School. I grew up in Sitka and graduated from Sitka High School in 2014. After high school, I earned my bachelor’s degree at Western Washington University in 2018. Prior to graduation, my academic advisor told me that what really matters when applying for jobs or graduate school is experience in the field. He said, “good grades and high GRE scores will get you an interview, but direct, meaningful experience is what the interview panel is looking for.” This conversation stuck with me while scrambling to figure out my next steps post-graduation. I have always known that I wanted to return to Sitka at some point (who doesn’t?). Aside from the excess of outdoor activities accessible in Sitka, the neighborly, kind community is why I wanted to return. I joined the Sitka AmeriCorps to gain experience in the school district setting and to serve the community and students as an AmeriCorps member from the perspective of someone who grew up in this community.
Working alongside and with students through AmeriCorps has confirmed my aspiration to work with students as a school counselor. With AmeriCorps I have been able to connect with students through academics, clubs, sports, and before- and after-school support programs. Athletics were vital to me growing up in a small community. My goal professionally is to coach as much as possible to allow students the same positive experiences I had in athletics. The experiences I’ve had through the AmeriCorps program are irreplaceable and more valuable than any job I’ve ever had. This is thanks to the students themselves and the kind, supportive staff throughout the Sitka School District. AmeriCorps week is March 8-14 and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the community of Sitka for their support of my service.
Megan Reid, Sitka
