Fundraiser for Gaza
Dear Editor: I’m grateful to the Daily Sitka Sentinel for publishing The Associated Press story about Omar Abu Kuwaik, the orphaned 4-year-old who received medical treatment and a prosthetic arm in the U.S. after losing his parents and sister in an Israeli bombing. Omar was the first Palestinian child to receive care from Global Medical Relief Fund, a U.S. charity that sponsors medical care for children who lose limbs in wars or disasters.
The U.S. government arms and supports the Israeli military, which has killed over 30,000 Palestinians since Oct. 7, two-thirds of whom are women and children. President Biden is currently seeking $14 billion more military funding for Israel.
At the same time, medical treatment for wounded children like Omar is dependent on charity. Currently, 8,000 Palestinians await permission to leave Gaza for medical treatment that is no longer available in Gaza.
As a Jew raised in the tradition of tikkun olam, the notion of repairing the world through human actions, I believe that each person has a hand in working towards the betterment of the world by participating in justice and acts of loving kindness.
With this motivation, I’ve set up an online fundraiser to provide emergency aid for people in Gaza, who are in desperate need of food, water, hygiene products, and other basic necessities. Please consider making a contribution.
Your donations to this fundraising effort will go to the Middle East Children’s Alliance, a non-profit organization that has been supporting children in Palestine for more than 35 years. Since Israel’s bombing of Gaza began, MECA has distributed aid to nearly 400,000 people in all parts of Gaza. MECA has a 4-star 100% rating on Charity Navigator. You can find more information about what MECA is doing in Gaza on their website: https://www.mecaforpeace.org/

Many thanks for your support!
