AmeriCorps Week
Dear Editor: My name is Noah Goodwin-Bain, and I serve with Sitka AmeriCorps at Mt. Edgecumbe High School. I was born and raised in New Zealand, before moving to Ohio with my family where I attended high school. I graduated from Allegheny College in the spring of 2021 with a bachelor of science degree in environmental science and a minor in philosophy.
AmeriCorps has given me the incredible opportunity to live and serve in a place with abundant wilderness, and vibrant culture. It has been such a rewarding experience to be able to do outdoor recreation activities with the students; learning lots from their personal experience, and being able to share knowledge I have accumulated from my own experiences.
The aspect of my service that I have found the most rewarding has been seeing the growth of students who tried something new on a rec activity, and continued to come back and dramatically improve their skills. I noticed this particularly on the rockwall, where a student who was apprehensive of climbing up it the first time has now progressed to the point where they can climb the hardest route.
I would like to thank the community of Sitka for supporting the AmeriCorps program, allowing people like myself to have amazing experiences, and have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of Alaska’s youths.

Antonov Visit
Dear Editor: Has there been reflection on Russian Ambassador Antonov’s visit to Sitka June 19, 2019?
“You can see Russia from here,” Sara Palin.
“You know, we can not find a record of Russia receiving the $7,200,000 payment for Alaska” (paraphrased), Ambassador Antonov at Sitka Historical Museum reception.
