AmeriCorps Week

Dear Editor: Greater Sitka Arts Council Inc. is a grateful beneficiary of AmeriCorps services. Through our local AmeriCorps program, administered by Sarah Lawrie, GSAC has been able to engage volunteer Kameron Daniels to staff our Sitka arts office.

Kammie does a great job leading the council’s activities. Her volunteer work enables the council to promote such things as Wearable Arts show, Sitka Community Theater, grants to artists, A/V rentals, Monthly Grind variety shows, Sitka Folk, gallery walks, Sitkans Can Dance and the melodrama.

The GSAC board of directors thanks AmeriCorps staff Faith Lee and Sarah Lawrie and volunteer Kammie Daniels for her talent, initiative and promotion of art as a community value.

Power Generation

Dear Editor: Sitka has an ugly rumor circulating, allegedly from an anonymous source within the power generation section of our electric department. Here’s the question:

Has, and how much has, raising Blue Lake dam increased actual electric power generation capacity?

The ‘‘anonymous source’’ rumor will lose creditability if we can have an answer to that question from a responsible person with a name. That would be good.

The ‘‘rumor’’ is that there has been little or no increase in actual electric power generation capacity. It started after questions were asked about the apparent need to run the diesel generator when Green Lake was down during relatively warm weather.

I will be looking forward to an answer to the ‘‘rumor’’ by a responsible human who has a name. Thank you.

Gil Truitt

Dear Editor: A longtime Sitka friend of mine, Shirley Anderson, has been regularly adding to my happiness by sending me the articles in the Sentinel written by another old friend, Gil Truitt.

I rejoiced particularly as I read Gil’s most recent article describing high school basketball tournaments and the amazing school spirit regularly shown over the decades by the Mt. Edgecumbe High School student body and its highly skilled and enthusiastic cheerleaders.

As an eight-year resident of Japonski and Alice islands, beginning in 1952, while I was pediatrician and school physician at Mt. Edgecumbe, as well as a regular attendee at Mt. Edgecumbe basketball games, this article, like all the others that Gil has written, brought back a flood of memories of the wonderful years that I spent in the Sitka area.

Thank you particularly for publishing this article. I hope you will regularly and frequently continue to publish Gil’s articles for my pleasure and the pleasure of many other Sitka old-timers.
