Dear Editor: Wow! I am so happy and excited to see the Mariculture Lab moved to Sitka and become affiliated with UAS.
While I was a teacher in Kake I had the opportunity to accompany several groups of students to Penn Cove on Whidbey Island to learn about the production of oysters and mussels. My goal was to introduce mariculture to the residents of Kake and build a new industry for the region.
When I moved to Sitka and was employed by UAS (Sitka Community College) I attempted to develop interest there but met with tremendous resistance.
Thanks to all who have seen the potential and can profit from it. Please keep up the good work.
