Generous Donation
Dear Editor: On behalf of the Girl Scouts of Alaska-Sitka Service Unit, we would like to thank the Sitka Rotary Club for their generous donation towards our Camporee event this summer.

Sitka Service Unit Manager

Hospital Benefit
Dear Editor: The Sitka Community Hospital Foundation held a fundraiser last Friday to support the capital campaign to build an additional unit for Mountainside Family Healthcare.
Coffee cups with a beautiful Mt. Edgecumbe logo created by Zina Deretsky, a visiting artist from the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, were filled with flowers from Sea Mart and sold at the hospital. The cups came from Harry’s Custom Services. The employees were offered a $5 discount as a Mother’s Day celebration. We sold out by 12:30!
A big thank you to Ann Wilkinson for advertising, Jennifer Corak and Elizabeth Faulkner for flower arranging and selling, Mary Hames and Sea Mart for the procurement of the flowers and donations of greenery and baby’s breath and Clint Mason, Sea Mart produce manager, for the guidance and design ideas.
If you have not already bought one of these beautiful coffee cups, they are for sale in the SCH lobby by the radiology/laboratory waiting area for $15. Thanks, again, for a “local” collaboration that makes Sitka such a great place to live!

Wine-Tasting Event
Dear Editor: The Sitka Seafood Festival, Mother’s Day wine tasting was a success!
The Homeport Eatery venue was fabulous as well as the hors d’oeuvres they served and the staff that worked the event. Odom, K & L and Specialty Imports had a wonderful variety of wines to taste and purchase at discounted prices. The House of Liquor helped with ticket sales and orders for purchased wine. Old Harbor Books helped with ticket sales. The Channel Club provided the wine glasses. Specialty Imports provided a great “Plungerhead” jacket for a door prize. Mitch Cowen, of Captain Black Bart’s Charters, donated a two-hour sightseeing tour for our live auction.
The sun was shining and the food, drinks and company were perfect. Thank you to everyone who sponsored, worked and came to the event.
Linda Olson,
Sitka Seafood Festival

Pool Response
Dear Editor: I write this to correct some facts to the Mr. Larry Edward’s letter to the editor about Japonski Island pool. He said, “Later that afternoon a meeting was held with local swimmers, who wanted 10 lanes by 50 meters long, for competition.”
    Not so.
    a) We the local swimmers have a name, Baranof Barracudas.
    b) Meeting was open to anyone, we weren’t the only ones there. Many people raised their voices and were heard by the state people. Not only us.
    c) Starting from the very first meeting, state had already decided that it was going to be a 50 meter pool with 10 lanes. People who were in charge of the meeting had poster pictures, drawings and many other details for a 50 meter pool all over the meeting room.
    d) With very old Blatchley pool we are ready for a new pool in this town. Including Petersburg “every” Southeast Alaska town has a brand-new pool and serving their children, adults and government agencies every day, I ask: What is wrong with our children, adults, U.S. Coast Guard and Public Safety Academy who are using the pool every day and suffering to dodge aging Blatchley Pool?
    e) We, as the BBSC already informed Senator Stedman on more than one occasion that we are way OK to have a 25-yard pool and have been giving him many ideas about how to raise money to get the operating costs of a pool.
And on top of everything, as we were informed that 50 meter pool is no longer. State has already decided to focus on 25-yard pool for Sitka.

Summer City Fair
Dear Editor: It all began with Sitka being selected as a Coast Guard City in 2011, one of two in Alaska (the other is Kodiak) and only 12 in the nation. When City and Borough of Sitka applied for Coast Guard City status, there was an ongoing commitment to support Sitka’s Coast Guard staff and families and to provide ways the community could celebrate and connect with our Coast Guard in community-wide events, starting with a community picnic hosted by the city.
The community group supporting Coast Guard City celebrations noted Kodiak’s annual fair event and invited Alaska’s Golden Wheel Amusements to once again come to Sitka. The last time this fair had been to Sitka was in 1983. Due to extremely high cost of transportation to Southeast, it was not possible to schedule a trip until now. Golden Wheel Amusements just arrived in Sitka and will kick off the Sitka Summer City Fair on Thursday, May 15, with 6-10 p.m. “preview night,” Friday and Saturday, May 16-17, noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday, May 18, noon to 6 p.m. (weather and crowds permitting).
The City of Sitka encourages all persons attending the fair to use this community event to welcome the Coast Guard staff and families to this family-friendly fair. Sitka is fortunate to have these dedicated personnel to help keep our residents and our region safe. Be sure to thank them for their service.
