Marine Debris
Dear Editor: The Sitka Sound Science Center would like to thank the U.S. Coast Guard for helping remove more than 4,000 pounds of marine debris from Shoals Point on Kruzof Island. Marine debris removal efforts in Southeast Alaska are very challenging because of the uneven, rocky terrain and limited shore accessibility.
This removal project would not have been possible without the time and resources donated by the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka.
The marine debris that was removed was collected during the Jamie Gorman Memorial Beach Cleanup that took place at the end of April and involved over 45 volunteers. The debris was kept at two different stash locations until the Coast Guard was able to land on Kruzof and haul it back to town.
Huge thank you to the volunteers who spent May 11 loading the debris into super sacks in preparation for the USCG to remove – Davey Lubin, Scott Wagner, Ed Conway, Ian Carson and Marta Martinsen – your time and hard work is much appreciated!
We look forward to continuing to collaborate with community partners during future marine debris removal efforts.
