Wonderful Sitkans
Dear Editor: Some weeks ago, following the broadcast of the evening Assembly meeting from the University, I returned to my car for the ride home. My front tire was completely flat but I attempted to drive to my home. I destroyed what was left of the tire by the time I reached the red/green lights. I left the car overnight with plans to deal with the tire problem the next morning.
I jumped out of the car with plans to walk home. Within the first block, Marty and Tina Johnson stopped their car and asked if they could give me a ride home. Fantastic! I was home in two minutes.
The next morning, I joined Gary and Nancy Short for our morning walk with plans to end the walk at the car with the destroyed tire. We hauled out my old jack and other tools to begin the tire exchange. Within a couple of minutes, a gentleman parked nearby indicated he had some of the latest equipment and he offered to help change the tire. Being of mature age, we jumped at his offer of assistance. He crawled under the car, adjusted the jack and proceeded to promptly lift the car high enough to remove the tire and then to install the spare tire. What a guy!
We were to learn the volunteer tire changer was one of Sitka’s finest police officers Mitchell Meens. Thanks again, Mitchell, for stepping up to fulfill our need. It was great. And thanks to Chief Schmidt for a fabulous police staff. Sitka is blessed.
