Senior Sneak Day
Dear Editor: The Mt. Edgecumbe High School’s senior class of 2014 would like to extend a sincere thanks to both Northern Sales and Sea Mart for their generous donations for our Senior Sneak Day. The donations themselves were happily received and put smiles on many faces. We value the relationship between the school and our local businesses and we appreciate the support received over the years. Thank you.

Skippers Benefit
Dear Editor: Sitka, you have once again blown our socks off with the depth of your generosity! The Sitka Skippers jump rope team is a community-based sport with volunteer coaches and parent helpers. Twenty hard working jumpers are preparing to go to the USA Jump Rope national competition in California. This year we are taking our largest and youngest team ever. We have competitors from ages 7 to 27 and will be competing against 73 teams from 31 other states.
Perhaps you have seen us selling chocolate bars, Easter bread, fry bread, burgers at the Elks or organizing garage sale items. These kids are dedicated to jumping. They train four days per week as well as work to raise needed money for expenses. We travel in late June and, as we are getting close to our goal, we would like to pause and give huge a THANK YOU to this long list of businesses for their donations and assistance so far: A/C Lakeside, Alaska Airlines, Allison’s Wonderland, Back Door Cafe, Baranof Island Brewing Co., Ben Franklin, Chocolate Moose, Chow Cuisine, Community Schools, Coastal Excavation, Elks Lodge, Hardrock Construction, Harry Race Pharmacy, The Junk Trunk, Ludvig’s Bistro, Northern Sales, The Nugget Restaurant, Pizza Express, Rain Country, Riviera Fisheries, Sea Mart Quality Foods, Sitka Bottling Company, Sitka Sentinel, Sitka Sound Slayers, Subway, Sweet Peas, Tsunami Wrestling Club, U.S. Coast Guard Spouses’ and Women’s Association, KIFW 1230 am, Raven (KCAW) 104.7 and KSBZ 103.1. Not to mention all of the wonderful Sitkans who have supported one or more of our fund raising events.
Thank you so much for your support and great attitude as we continue working towards this incredible event.

Retirement Thanks
Dear Editor: Having just retired from working at the Centennial Hall after 26 years, I wanted to say it’s been a great job. It’s been busy, sometimes very busy, but worth it in part because of groups like the New Archangel Dancers and Alaska Day Festival. I wanted to thank the staff at the building – Don Kluting, Donna Roles, Kent Gibson, Dave Clark and a former employee, Laurie Nesheim.
Of Don I want to really thank. He is the gold standard of what a good public servant, and a good person is both as the manager of Centennial Hall and as the director of Sitka Mountain Rescue. I know members of the public appreciate him, not so sure our city leaders have appreciated what he has done for them over the 30-plus years he has worked for them, both at Centennial Hall and saving lives on land and on marine rescues.

Please Don’t Litter
Dear Editor: Baranof Buddies first-graders are feeling sad because we picked up 41 pounds of garbage. Last week we walked along Sawmill Creek road and the sea walk to learn what is littered the most. We picked up mostly cigarette butts, glass bottles and aluminum cans.
When people litter it makes the Earth sick. Litter gets blown into the ocean and when animals eat it they will get sick and die.
We would like to ask everyone to recycle and reuse their stuff so we make less garbage. We hope people in Sitka can help us clean up garbage so animals don’t eat it and die.
EVERYBODY, PLEASE DON’T LITTER! Your dear friends,
Baranof Buddies,
Baranof Elementary School
