Arbor Day Planting

Dear Editor: On behalf of the City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation staff, we would like to extend appreciation to the Tree and Landscape Committee members for coordinating the annual Arbor Day planting at Crescent Harbor Park on Saturday, May 16. We would also like to recognize the Alaska Community Forestry Program, Division of Forestry for providing grant funds for the Arbor Day planting.

In four hours, with the efficient planting efforts of Tree and Landscape Committee members, eight Sargent’s crabapples were planted. This miniature variety, called ‘‘Tina’’ will remain small, under 8 feet, and is popular for its spring display of showy blossoms. The ‘‘Tina’’ variety is a good choice for small yards and under power lines. The committee volunteers, Joe D’Arienzo, Lisa Moore, Chris Gale and Deb Miller, dug planting holes, untangled root balls, backfilled, mulched and fed the trees.

Information regarding trees; including proper planting; and other Tree and Landscape Committee activities may be found on the city website, Parks and Recreation webpage: http://www.cityofsitka.com/government/departments/parks/ParksandRecreation.html and on the Alaska Community Forestry webpage: http://forestry.alaska.gov/community/index.htm.

Thank you, Tree and Landscape Committee members, for all your efforts to beautify and maintain the city’s many parks and building grounds.

Lynne Brandon,

City and Borough of Sitka

Parks and Recreation Manager
