Voting Issues

Dear Editor: So, let me get this straight.

The political party that is so terrified about being replaced by Black people is the same political party that has installed, over time, radical, extremist right-wing Justices to the Supreme Court with the express hope and understanding that they take away a freedom that American women have been afforded for 50 years – a very personal right about the autonomy of a woman’s own body and the right to make her own choices about her health. And, if this freedom is removed, will certainly have a far greater impact on minority women who will then be forced to carry to term unplanned pregnancies. The resulting babies may be Black babies, all of whom will grow up to be Black people. These two things do not compute.

If said political party is actually worried about replacement theory, wouldn’t it make more sense to assure that women, especially Black women, continue to have access to freedom of choice? Logically, if replacement theory were its real concern, it would allow Black women choice but not give white women choice, thereby increasing the population of white people and decreasing the population of Black people. Perhaps the political party has not thought these things through completely? It is not logical.

Of course, it is possible that these issues are not actually of concern to the political party, but simply a means of manipulating the minds and emotions of certain voting blocks.

Birthday Quilt Show

Dear Editor: This is a very heartfelt THANK YOU (yes, I’m shouting it!) to everyone who helped make my 70th birthday celebration (here comes another shout) OUTSTANDING!

This includes all the visitors to my quilt show, ‘‘70 for 70,’’ and for their happy birthday sentiments, and quilt appreciation and curiosity; all the Ocean Wave Quilt Guild helpers and/or brains who kept me going. You are wonderful: Jane Seesz, typist, and Charlotte’s shorthand translator extraordinaire; Janine Holzman and Megan Pasternak for being tireless; Jill Scheidt of Abby’s Reflection, who was much smarter than I and, to paraphrase, said, ‘‘You really can’t be in two places at once – just be at your quilt show. But be sure and don’t forget to come back to work next week’’; the Sitka Fine Arts Camp on the historic Sheldon Jackson College campus for the use of Whitmore Hall as the perfect quilt display space; the Daily Sitka Sentinel and its staff members, particularly Shannon Haugland and James Poulson; Sea Mart for the yummy birthday cake; and Dave Nicholls, my other half, for his extreme patience. I hope I haven’t left anyone out, as it really does take ‘‘a village to raise a child’’ (70 years young!) and it’s why I love the community of Sitka. Again, with most sincere thanks,

Charlotte Candelaria, Sitka
