Memorial Day

Dear Editor: Memorial Day remembers America’s war dead.

Unless and until we remember that there are other war dead (both military and, historically increasingly, civilian and non-combatant) besides just American, there will be more, new American war dead to be remembered with every new Memorial Day.

And more, new non-American war dead to be forgotten. (By us, perhaps, but not by those observing Memorial Days of their own.)

Baranof School Mural

Dear Editor: On behalf of Baranof Elementary School’s children, families, teachers, and principal, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Sitka Emblem Club, Spenard Builders Supply, the Greater Sitka Arts Council, Kammie Daniels and Ben Franklin Store for providing a large part of the funding for the recently completed kindergarten and first grade art mural projects.

It was a rich experience for all 180 Baranof students. Each kindergartner worked on completing the kindergarten mural and each first-grader added their own part to the first grade mural. The ideas and themes of the murals came from the grade level science curriculums and the students. The kindergarten theme is “The Birds of Sitka” and the first grade’s is “Sea Critters of the Sitka Tide Pools.”

These murals will be permanently installed in the Baranof hallways and appreciated for years to come. We invite the public to come and view our beautiful new murals. (Please check in at the office first and someone will guide you to the murals. Thank you.)
