Earth Day Events
Dear Editor: “Happy Earth-day to the Earth” chanted humans veiled as animals and plants on April 22 as we marched down Lincoln Street for the Annual Parade of the Species.
Thanks to many community partnerships, Sitka celebrated Earth Day throughout all of April. Events such as Kid’s Eco-challenge, community hikes, nature walks, and costume-making classes all gave Sitkans the chance to celebrate the planet we share. Sitka Conservation Society would like to thank our many community partners who made each Earth Month event an incredible success. The effort demonstrates Sitka’s commitment to a strong and sustainable community.
Thanks especially to Sitka National Historical Park (Ryan Carpenter), Sitka Sound Science Center (Mia Kuartei and staff), Sitka Native Education Program (Chuck Miller) for being such important partners to our events; Sea Mart, Murray Pacific, Russell’s, Old Harbor Books for sponsoring and donating to our events; Raven Radio, Daily Sitka Sentinel and Charles Bingham for promoting our events; Sitka Police Department for helping us to have a safe parade; Sitka Electric Vehicle Group, Sitka Community Hospital Health Promotion, Mt. Edgecumbe Youth Environmental Action, Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game, Airlift Northwest, U.S. Forest Service for hosting Parade of the Species booths; community volunteers: Mim McConnell, Sarah Curley, Caitlin Lavorgna, Claire Sanchez, Lisa Gilardi, Ray Ziehm (Bear #1), Toby Koch (Bear #2), Melissa Hamilton and to the several other amazing organizations who offered special events in honor of the Earth. With sincere gratitude,
Molly Johnson

Teacher Appreciation
Dear Editor: We want to bring attention to Teacher Appreciation Week, which began Monday, May 2. We are encouraging everyone to reach out and thank a teacher. Our teachers make a difference in the lives of our students every day. Their commitment to our children shows itself in so many ways. The relationships that are built during the PK-12 years are the foundation in creating lifelong learners. The connections teachers make with students help motivate our young Sitkans to do their best. On a recent student survey, we learned from the students themselves just how influential teachers are.
Our society continually expects more and more from our teachers and they continually step up to the challenge. Our teachers are our future.
The School Board and Superintendent Dr. Mary Wegner want to publicly thank our teachers and staff for everything they do to help our students achieve success, and for helping create a promising future for all of us.
Tim J Fulton, President
of the Sitka School Board
Dr. Mary Wegner, Superintendent
