Girls on the Run

Dear Editor: Sitkans Against Family Violence and the Girls on the Run of Greater Alaska council would like to thank everyone who came out for the One in a Million Fun Run! This 5K was the final celebratory event for our amazing participants, girls in third-fifth grade, who have been learning healthy lifestyle skills, building self-esteem, and training over the past 12 weeks. We had so many family members, friends, and community members come out to cheer them on and help them each achieve their 5K goal. Way to go, girls.

The event would not have been possible without the work of all the wonderful volunteers who helped with course set-up, added to the celebration through activities like face painting and our photobooth, ran as personal supporters with the participants, and were great cheerleaders. Thank you to everyone who contributed time and energy to make this event such a success.

Many community sponsors donated as well to make the season and the 5K possible, including the Hames Corporation, Russell’s, the Hames Center, White’s Incorporated, the Sitka Sound Slayers, Work and Rugged Gear, and Ludvig’s Bistro. Many of our participants receive scholarships to be a part of GOTR, and we are very grateful for the organizations and individuals who help support this positive program for Sitka youth.

This spring, GOTR International served its one millionth participant. In Sitka, GOTR has served over 160 participants in the past seven years, with over 45 of those girls involved in multiple seasons. For our Sitka 5K, we worked to honor how our participants, past and present, are special and how they are One in a Million! If you missed the event, visit safv.org to find out more about the program (and stay tuned for pictures there and at facebook.com/SAFVAlaska).

Again, thank you to everyone who helped bring such joy and celebration to the community of Sitka through the GOTR 5K.

Elena Gustafson,

GOTR Coordinator,

Sitkans Against Family Violence

Thanks, Pizza Express

Dear Editor: Baranof Elementary School would like to thank Pizza Express for their generous support of our school. We were able to enjoy a wonderful night of good food and fun at Pizza Express and they donated a portion of sales to the school.

We would like to thank the staff for their help and patience as they provided an overflowing restaurant with excellent service. We’d also like to thank the Baranof staff that volunteered to bus tables and pour water.

The proceeds from this event will help fund activities such as classroom field trips, Artists in the Classroom, the Iditaread Reading Race and free book giveaways. Lastly, we would also like to extend our thanks to the Families of Baranof and the community for joining us at Pizza Express for dinner. Without your support, the night would not have been such a success.
