MEHS Graduation

Dear Editor: The Mt. Edgecumbe High School class of 2017 celebrated commencement ceremonies at the Sitka Performing Arts Center on May 5. Thank you to the expert staff at the Performing Arts Center. J Bradley, as always, works to assure that the details of lights, sound and electronics are perfect. The PAC is a beautiful facility and MEHS is grateful to hold our graduation there.

Thank you to Penny at Garden Ventures, who helped the class of 2017 choose trees to plant as a legacy gift to the school. A big thank you goes to Bev’s Flowers whose floral expertise beautifies our graduation ceremony. Thank you Sitka Daily Sentinel for providing thoughtful attention to this event. Families from around Alaska arrive in Sitka and anxiously await your fine coverage of graduation.

MEHS students and staff appreciate the community organizations that award scholarships to MEHS seniors. These awards highlight the dynamic relationship Mt. Edgecumbe High School students share with the Sitka community. We, at MEHS, thank you for honoring the hard work and accomplishments of our students.

Finally, we are all heartened to see community members, MEHS alumni and family help us celebrate the class of 2017. Thank you all.

Marcia Drake,

MEHS Graduation Coordinator

Lady Wolves Softball

Dear Editor: This past weekend the home portion of the Sitka High Lady Wolves softball season ended. Having retaken the reins of the program in February, I was unsure of the roster, the budget, or the support the program would enjoy. After two months of practice and games any concerns I may have had, evaporated.

As usual, Sitka is represented by a great group of girls, though by and large lacking in game experience overall. The budget, including a tremendously expensive trip to Kodiak was daunting. But the support has been overwhelming.

From the city, the groundskeeping crew has done a great job in making the field playable for both the girls and the boys. Thanks, Michael, Judd and Sean. The group, Sitka Youth Sports, came through with an extraordinary contribution. Thanks, Ed Conway, Mark Buggins and Austin Inman. CHARR continues to support softball in a very generous manner. Our parents, led by Pam and Monte Young, Michelle Fleming, Nicki McArthur, Pat Barker and Sandi Holder, have led ambitious efforts at fund-raising with our annual garage sale, ball park concessions, and a unique pulled-pork dinner sponsored by the Elks Lodge. Dan Evans and Larry Snyder have featured our girls on the radio and local TV. Our fan base has been vocal and numerous.

We have also had a group of folks willing to give up their time to help our girls be better people, students, and of course, softball players. Thanks to Cliff Chandler, Katie Hagan, Jule Peterson, Megan Fondell, Kris Pearson, Dan Gray, Stefania Potrzuski and Kyle Young. Your patience and expertise have been the key to the development of the team. Susan Ross has been extremely helpful in orchestrating all of it as the athletic director of SHS.

It is always difficult to thank everyone and inevitably I have forgotten someone. For this I apologize and please know that you are appreciated. Please wish us luck as we travel to Ketchikan and Juneau to finish off the season with the goal for qualifying for and winning the state championship.

Bob Potrzuski,
