Dear Editor: The organizers of the Medvejie Solstice Run would like to thank the runners, sponsors, and all the volunteers who made the event and fundraiser successful and fun for all. More than 100 participants including runners, walkers, dogs, kids, and baby strollers, found their way through a 5k, 10k, and ½ marathon race. Some ran fast, some walked, and some picked salmonberries along the way.
Success was largely in part to the work of many volunteers. The t-shirts were designed by Calder Prussian with help from his art teacher, Charlie Skultka. Registration was organized by Bridget Hitchcock, Chris Horan, Elizabeth Bagley, Jen McNichol and Janie Hall. Drink stations and turn-arounds were supported by Nikki Moore and her dad, Landon Kirkness, Patty McPike, Richard Gould, and Amy McGlaughlin. Randy Hitchcock, Aaron Prussian, and Jen McNichol were timing and sequencing runners between the three races. Brian McGlaughlin kept the bears away and maintained safety and communication along the course.
The fundraiser, which contributes to Sitka High School cross country and track teams wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the following local businesses: Davis Realty, Sea Mart Quality Foods, Birch Equipment, Russell’s Outdoor Sports Store, Schmolck Mechanical Contractors, Daily Sitka Sentinel, First Bank, Sitka Work and Rugged Gear Store, Neurobehavioral Consultants, Foreign Automotive, Tongass Federal Credit Union, Christine Harrington, the Venneberg Family, and F/V Patriot. And lastly, thanks to the runners, and the crowds, that came out to support this fun and healthy day at the races.
