The Metlakatla Chiefs won their opening game at the Alaska School Activities Association State Basketball Championships at Anchorage’s Alaska Airlines Center on Thursday and the Wrangell Lady Wolves lost their opener.
Metlakatla, the Region V 2A boys champion, and defending state champion, held on for a 46-45 win over the Unalakleet Wolfpack.
Metlakatla trailed 12-8 after the first quarter and led 22-14 at the half and 36-26 after three quarters.
Senior Conrad Hudson led Metlakatla with 16 points, senior Desmond King and junior Coleton Hayward had 11 apiece, sophomores Aidan Rolando and Isaac Henderson 3 apiece, and sophomore Elijah Caspersen 2.

Championships at the B.J. McGillis Gymnasium. Wrangell won the Region title. They lost their first game at the ASAA State Tournament on Thursday 58-55 to Unalakleet and play in a consolation game today.
The Chiefs were 13-27 from the field (5-18 from 3-pt) and 5-10 from the charity stripe, the Wolfpack were 15-32 (4-14 from 3-pt) and 3-8 from the line.
Unalakleet junior Aidan Ivanoff had a game-high 32 points, senior Duncan Ivanoff 7, junior Adrian Pleasant 4, and senior Nathan Ivanoff 2.
Metlakatla pulled down 30 rebounds (Hudson 9, King 8), Unalakleet 27 (A. Ivanoff 8, Pleasant 7). The Chiefs had 14 turnovers, the Wolfpack 11.

Metlakatla, seeded fourth in the state tournament, played today against top seeded Unalaska Raiders. The score was not available by press time.

The Wrangell Lady Wolves, the Region V 2A girls champion, lost to the Unalakleet Wolfpack 58-55.
Wrangell led 12-10 after the first quarter and 31-28 at the half. Unalakleet led 46-39 after three quarters.
Wrangell junior Kaylyn Easterly had 21 points, junior Maddy Harding 11, senior Abigail Gerald 10, senior Helen Decker 6, freshman Jamie Early 4, sophomore Elizabeth Armstrong 2, and freshman Liana Carney 1.
The Lady Wolves hit 21-45 from the field (4-16 from the 3-pt line) and 1-8 from the charity stripe; The Wolfpack were 13-31 from the field (8-27 from 3-pt) and 8-13 from the line.
Unalakleet junior Jewel Wilson scored 22 points, senior Summer Sagoonick 11, junior Kailyn Haugen 9, senior Allie Ivanoff 8, sophomore Brianna Ivanoff and Sonya Ivanoff 3 apiece, and freshman Victoria Fisher 2.
Wrangell had 47 rebounds (Decker 15) and Unalkleet 32 (Wilson 8). The Lady Wolves had 17 turnovers to the Wolfpack’s 7. Unalakleet had 16 steals, Wrangell 4.

The ASAA 1A/2A state tournament continues through Saturday. The ASAA 3A/4A tournament begins Thursday, March 21 and runs through Saturday, March 23. State cheer competitions are Wednesday, March 20.
