Michael DeCapua

Posted

Michael Anthony DeCapua was introduced to the enormous wonders of life on a gorgeous July day in 1956. After 59 years of traveling, working, having family and developing his unique mindset, his spirit flew to freedom on the cold and rainy day of Aug. 26, 2015, at 1:50 a.m., at Sitka Community Hospital.

Michael had suffered a rapid decline in health and severe physical impairments at the time of his death.

He leaves two siblings, Barbara and Victor; three older children, Misty, Melanie and Mario; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will grow up hearing tales of Grandpa’s adventurous life.

Michael was a deckhand in Sitka for more than 25 years. His captain, Mike Eels, commented with pride, “Mike was the best deckhand I’ve had.”

On Jan. 30, 1998, Mike had luck and God on his side as he miraculously survived the sinking of the F/V LaConte on the Fairweather grounds.

His family asks for prayers and remembrance in their time of sorrow. “We love you, Michael,” they wrote.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to help defray the costs of interment be made to the Michael DeCapua Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 322, Sitka, AK 99835. Those needing more information may call 747-3143.

A potluck will be held after final arrangements are made. Friends are asked to call 747-3143 so family members can let them know the date and other details.

I don’t have to speak, she defends me.

A drunkard’s dream if I ever did see one.” – “Cripple Creek,” Robbie Robertson, 1969.
