One has played four years at Mt. Edgecumbe, one has only played organized basketball for three years, and another has paid his dues to finally get varsity minutes.
The Mt. Edgecumbe High Braves senior boys will be honored this coming Tuesday night before their game against the Sitka Wolves in the B.J. McGillis Gymnasium.
“I’m very appreciative of the quality of young adults I get to work with every year,” Mt. Edgecumbe coach Archie Young said. “I want to say thank you to them all.”

MEHS Braves seniors are manager Briana Clark (Dillingham),
Bear Brown (Anchorage), Cyprian Johnson-Edwards (Emmonak), Emmett Dunaway (Dillingham), and manager Hayleigh Johanson (Dillingham). They will be honored on Tuesday night before their game against the Sitka Wolves at B.J. McGillis Gymnasium

The Mt. Edgcumbe Braves seniors are:
Bear Brown (Anchorage), forward/guard. Favorite food - Chicken curry. Favorite book - “Holes” (Louis Sachar). Favorite movie - Probably a superhero movie with Marvel characters. Favorite song - “Somebody To Love” (Queen). Nickname - My actual middle name is Little Bear but everyone just calls me Bear here. Best part of your game - My length; I can shoot better than most big men. Pregame ritual - Not really, just be ready to play. Favorite basketball memory - In Barrow, an inside joke, Jonathan Constantine came up with a funny line that we all say, are you “tough” now. What will you miss about MEHS - What I will miss most is coming down and playing at open gym every night and the friends I have made over the years. Advice to young players - Keep going and never think about quitting. You just have to keep going no matter how hard it gets. Coach’s comments - Bear is a third year MEHS student who has only played organized basketball for three years now. He has come a long way in these three years. We will definitely miss how hard he works.
Cyprian Johnson-Edwards (Emmonak), guard. Favorite food - Chicken salad. Favorite book - “The Kite Runner” (Khaled Hosseini). Favorite movie - “Creed II.” Favorite song - “Middle Child” (J. Cole). Nickname - Cyp or Cyp II, I’m named after my dad. Best part of your game - Defense, I’m kind of fast on my feet. Pregame ritual - Just listen to music before my games, not try and think of stuff that could happen, just let it pass by. Favorite basketball memory - Our recent team ice bath. We were all crying in there. What will you miss about MEHS - The basketball court and my friends that I have come to call family over the past four years here. Advice to young players - Keep your head up, don’t give up, it’s going to get harder but you have to push through it. Coach’s comments - Cyprian is a four year MEHS student. He’s worked hard to get where he is today. He has earned all the playing time he gets. Great young man with great work ethic.
Emmett Dunaway (Dillingham), forward/guard. Favorite food - Gyro. Favorite book - “Hoop Time Legends.” Favorite movie - “Let’s Be Cops.” Favorite song - “Slime Belief” (NBA Youngboy). Nickname - Em. Best part of your game - Being athletic. Pregame ritual - Sometimes before games I listen to classical music. Favorite basketball memory - There’s a lot but probably the ice bath with the whole team. What will you miss about MEHS - All the friends and just being here in general, it just feels right. Advice to young players - Keep going even if you want to quit and it feels hard because you are only going to have one chance to do it here or wherever you are going to high school. Coach’s comments - Emmett is a 4-year MEHS student who has grown on and off the court. I appreciate how much more open he seems to be this year. He has been far more vocal on the court this year. I’ve enjoyed watching his growth as a player and a young man the past four years.
Hayleigh Johanson (Dillingham), manager. Favorite food - Spaghetti. Favorite book - “One of Us Is Lying” (Karen M. McManus). Favorite movie - “Mary Poppins.” Favorite song - “Copycat” (Billie Eilish). Nickname - Hayleigh Jo or Hayleigh Bug. Best part of managing - Getting to watch the games front row with the boys. Pregame ritual - Getting clipboards, medicine bag, and water bottles. Favorite memory - When Mr. Young had the good idea to take a picture of me and two of the other senior boys in “Game of Thrones” outfits. What will you miss about MEHS - I love that the teachers are nice and are there for us. We have lots of friends in all the dorms to talk to, we are so close. Advice to young kids - As soon as they open ask if you can join the team because it looks good on the resume and it is great to have something to do. Career goal - Plan to go to UAA and become a social worker. Coach’s comments - This is her first year as manager but she is really on the ball. We really appreciate all she does for the team… and she is a “Game of Thrones” fan as well.
Briana Clark (Dillingham), manager. Favorite food - Potato salad. Favorite book - “The Shadow Children” series (Margaret Peterson Haddix). Favorite movie - “Matilda.” Favorite song - Any rap music. Nickname - N/A Best part of managing - I actually just started a couple weeks ago but I just like watching basketball games. Pregame ritual - Getting the bench items ready, clipboards etc. Favorite memory - It will be when we win regionals. What will you miss about MEHS - My friends. Advice to young kids - Stay caught up on your work. When you get behind it’s really hard to catch up. Career goal - Plan to study social work at UAA. Coach’s comment - She’s also a first-year manager and an invaluable part of our team.
