Dear Editor: Dear friends, supporters, and alumni of Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool, September marked 50 incredible years of imagination, exploration, discovery, and creativity at Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool! Five decades ago, a small group of motivated and passionate parents founded Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool to give their own children the opportunity of an enriching preschool experience and trusted childcare in Sitka.
Incorporated in September 1976, Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in December 1977. Since then, more than two thousand children have passed through our doors, first on Japonski Island, and now in the historic building on the Pioneers Home campus. For half a century, our preschool has been a beloved place where Sitka’s young learners can explore and discover their world through play, build meaningful friendships with peers and teachers, and develop skills that serve as the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
To honor this milestone anniversary, we are seeking support from our community and extended preschool family to ensure Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool lives on as a place for high-quality early childhood education for decades to come, supporting Sitka’s future learners and leaders. Please help us meet our goal of raising $50,000 to celebrate our 50th anniversary. This money will go toward our needs-based scholarship fund, competitive teacher compensation for their incredible work and dedication, and the overall financial wellbeing of our treasured preschool. Tax-deductible donations can be made by mailing a check to Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool at 129 Seward Street or visiting our website at www.mtedgecumbepreschool.org.
An outdoor celebration is also in the works for April 3, 2027, to bring alumni, parents, teachers, and friends together to share in the joy that is Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool.
Think bubbles, treats, and lots of room to play. We welcome your photos and stories from your or your child’s time at our preschool. Stay tuned for more information about this family-friendly party.
Thank you for the role you’ve played in our preschool’s history. We are excited to celebrate with you!
With gratitude,
Holly Marban,
Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool Director
