Dear Editor: On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Arauja was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Houston while driving a work van with his crew.
On July 13, 26-year-old Johan Sebastian Durán Guerrero was shot and killed by ICE agents in Biddeford, Maine. Durán Guerrero’s wife and daughter witnessed his killing – the 3-year-old in her Bluey pajamas. Neighbors heard their cries ringing through the street.
Both men were beloved members of their communities, killed on their way to work. Neither had a criminal record. Neither victim was the target of the immigration officers’ operation.
ICE has shot and killed at least eight people since Trump returned to office in January 2025. In addition, at least 52 people have died in ICE detention.
This Saturday, July 25, Sitkans for Peace and Democracy will join communities across the United States for a national day of action – holding vigils, protests and demonstrations to demand justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Johan Sebastian Guerrero, and the many more who have been killed by ICE. We will gather to pay their respects, mourn, and demand ICE OUT! noon-1 p.m. at the roundabout. Please join us.
As my neighbor at last week's vigil said: It helps me get through the rest of the week, knowing that I have done something.
Same!
