Dear Editor: Proposition No. 2 is on the ballot for the Regular Municipal Election on October 7. If passed, this proposition will require every submittal of a citizen initiative be accompanied by an economic impact statement.
The proposition prescribes in detail the scope and certification needed in the economic impact statement.
Here are two things to understand about the economic impact studies required by Proposition No. 2.
• They will be expensive – prohibitively so for most Sitkans.
• They do not need to be mandated. If such economic impact statements are important to a particular citizen initiative, they can be provided by sponsors and/or opponents.
If passed, Proposition No. 2 will disenfranchise Sitkans and diminish their involvement in the citizen initiative process. Please vote NO on Proposition No. 2.
You can review Proposition No. 2 on the City and Borough of Sitka website (https://www.cityofsitka.com/RegularMunicipalElection).
