Dear Editor: Why didn’t sponsors of Prop 2 conduct a professional Economic Impact Study Report (ESIR) before submitting their initiative application to the city?
They didn’t have to.
However, sponsors of Prop 2 propose all citizens’ initiatives moving forward do so.
Taking proactive steps to demonstrate the ease of securing a research firm to conduct the rigid requirements for an ESIR detailed in Prop 2 would have signaled transparency and demonstrated financial ease for Sitkans in the future because “it probably wouldn’t have cost very much.”
I voted no on Prop 2 and did not support candidates running for Assembly or School Board who engaged in the “Decline To Sign” campaign. Any signature gathered to move a citizens initiative forward for city approval would NEVER cause anyone to close their business, move their family or contribute to the economic collapse of Sitka.
Initiative signatures are not a vote.
