Wine-Making
Dear Editor: The Sitka Seafood Festival would like to thank Michelle Putz and Perry Edwards for a fabulous and very informative wine-making class last week. They covered everything from what one would need to make wine, to sharing some of their amazing vino. These two are just another demonstration of how wonderful and generous Sitka’s community is.
Not only did they donate their time for the class, but have also volunteered to be judges for next year’s SSF wine- making contest set for June 29, 2013. Wine takes a lot longer to make than beer. Wine takes three-five months or even longer before you can drink it, so now is the time to get a batch started for the June 2013 competition.
Michelle and Perry have been making wine since 1995. They’ve tried making everything from apple to pea pod wine, but their favorites are rhubarb and plum wine. They’ve taught wine-making to over 100 people in Sitka over the last several years. If you missed the class, these two are also willing to help those interested in the wine-making process.
Michelle is quoted as saying, “Many homemade fruit wines are sweet and fruity, like expensive ‘ice wines’ or muscat wines. Often, you can taste the fruit the wine was made from. A good fruit wine transports you back to summer as you sip the strawberries or rhubarb harvested out of your garden. Sitka is a great place for the home wine-maker. It has plenty of local fruit, a supportive community (with many spare carboys to lend out), and long winter nights to enjoy sitting around the woodstove with a glass of wine and close friends.”
Thanks, once again, to Michelle and Perry. And to everyone else, get going on your creations for the June contest! For more info contact Alicia at sitkaseafoodfestival@gmail.com

Bronze Award
Dear Editor: Five of us decided to earn the highest award of a junior Girl Scout – the bronze award. We wanted to do a project about children. We noticed that some kids in Sitka didn’t have warm coats to wear in the winter. We decided to ask for donations.
Sitka’s generosity is amazing. For our winter coat drive we collected over 325 coats, over 100 hats, and more than 100 pairs of gloves.
A special thank you to the following: all Sitka Girl Scouts for the great turnout and donations at our kickoff party; McDonald’s for supplying juice for the party; Raven Radio and KIFW for helping us create PSAs and airing them; the Daily Sitka Sentinel for taking pictures and running PSAs; Sea Mart; A/C Lakeside; city planning and advising; and Evadne at Salvation Army for helping distribute the coats.
The final coat giveaway is this Saturday, Dec. 1, 8-10 a.m. at the Salvation Army for anyone who could use a coat.

Sincere Thanks
Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for helping with my fight against cancer. I have truly been blessed to be a part of this community.
As I continue my journey I would like to thank each and every one of you who have supported me financially and spiritually.

Garage Sale Thanks
Dear Editor: Thank you to the community of Sitka for once again supporting the Salvation Army through Sitka Christian Center’s annual garage sale. It was a great success. Thanks to you many more families in Sitka will have had a happier Thanksgiving and be looking forward to a merrier Christmas.
