Armistice Day
Dear Editor: This coming Wednesday (Nov. 11, 2015) is (I think) the only nationwide mandated federal holiday that had its name changed. I could be wrong.
I think that change occurred when I was in elementary school in the mid-1960s. There was a ‘‘newspaper’’ you got in the class called The Weekly Reader.
I am all in favor of honoring our brave soldiers who survived brutality beyond belief.
The original reason for honoring the International Diplomatic Assembly that declared peace to end World War I was this: A) the modern world had never before experienced a ‘‘world war’’; B) the winning and losing sides decided it was time for that war and all wars to end.
The signing of peace documents was timed for the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year. It was named: ‘‘Armistice’’ Day. I would prefer to honor peace (armistice) than war.
