Police Blotter
Police received the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
November 8
A caller said he found what might be a baggy with drugs inside a store. The baggy’s owner arrived at the police station and said inside the baggy was a bone from surgery on her knee.
At 2:31 p.m. two drivers reported racing at 55-60 mph in a 35 mph zone on HPR were given warnings.
At 9:47 p.m. a caller said he’d been in a bar when his ex-girlfriend came in. Earlier, an officer had served him with a DVO his ex had petitioned for and he wanted to talk to police.
A woman said someone broke into her home again, and she suspects he’s coming in through the shower wall. She was advised of her options.
A woman said her ex-boyfriend has been at the same bar as she and her friends for a few hours, and while she believes he’s been abiding by a DVO, he’d been glaring at her all night and wouldn’t stop looking at her. Police reviewed the DVO and determined no crime was committed.
At 11:50 p.m. a caller said she’d been awakened by a loud noise like gunshots, 10 in a row.
November 9
A caller said a man was sitting in a cafe yelling and talking to imaginary people. The owner called police shortly afterward for help.
A car was reported parked in the roadway at 1300 Edgecumbe with no one around. Police found the owner, who said she was getting a massage and didn’t know parking rules.
Police were called about a man trying to get into a house to fight with a resident. Officers spoke to two parties, one of whom was intoxicated.
A caller said he chased three people who had come on his property and stolen his trail cam. Officers found the trail cam still in the tree where he’d placed it, and the suspects were actually a tree branch swaying in the wind. The other picture was of the caller.
At 5:47 p.m. a caller said a driver pulled out in front of a vehicle almost causing an accident, and stopped and started up again before turning onto SMC.
At 6:43 p.m. a caller in the 2900 block of SMC said he found a couple on his property who had headlamps and a spotlight, and claimed to be hunting mushrooms.
A caller said a vehicle with people inside was parked near Kramer Avenue and marijuana smoke was seen. Police found the vehicle but no sign of suspicious activity.
November 10
At 1:21 a.m. a caller asked that an officer be sent to her house at once; neighbors had broken into her house and were making it smell like blood. There was no property damage.
At 1:26 a.m. a caller said a female client was too intoxicated to get into her home. She was found to have a BAC of .238 with an altered mental status, and EMS was called.
At 1:27 a.m. a man and a woman, who weren’t dressed for the weather, walked from the airport main entrance and past the Coast Guard main entrance, a caller said.
At 6:19 a.m. a caller at a hotel said she found an intoxicated man asleep on a couch when she arrived.
A caller said she’d received an SOS from her niece’s cellphone, stating it was in Olga Strait. The caller was told it was an accidental dial.
At 3:19 p.m. a caller said she’d arrived home to find a naked man in her house. While she was on the phone the man left and was seen walking in the bathroom at Sandy Beach.
At 7:27 p.m. a caller said a homeless man was acting strangely and talking to himself on Katlian. He had a shopping cart full of his belongings and was most likely intoxicated.
At 7:56 p.m. a DeGroff resident said he’d heard screaming and fireworks earlier but it had calmed down.
At 9:15 p.m. a caller at a bar said a customer got punched in the face by another man. An arrest was made.
At 9:44 p.m. a caller said her son had friends over when a fight broke out inside the house. Her husband asked her son’s friends to leave because “punches were being thrown.” The group left before officers arrived.
At 11:52 p.m. a caller on Katlian said people were setting off fireworks and waking him up. He said it happens every weekend and this time he nearly fell because of the noise.
November 11
Police checked on a man who might be having “an episode,” and was driving erratically. He calmed down, and his family retrieved the car.
At 12:55 p.m. a man jumped out of a moving vehicle wearing only his shorts. He was taken to his home.
A shoplifter paid for a stolen item and got a criminal trespass notice.
At 5 p.m. a large bear was seen under a bridge at Sitka National Historical Park. Officers were notified.
A caller said a man tried to get into a vehicle, and appeared intoxicated and confused, near Castle Hill.
At 9:50 p.m. a caller said a man had bought alcohol for minors.
At 9:50 p.m. a domestic dispute was reported. An arrest was made.
November 12
A man was arrested after a woman said she’d been assaulted.
At 5 a.m. a resident reported a bear had gotten into his trash on Charlie Joseph Street, sometime in the last 45 minutes.
Sitka Police
Carl E. Whitehurst 40, was charged with criminal trespass in the second degree early Sunday, and attempted motor vehicle theft.
Tommy Svilar, 24, was charged Saturday with assault in the fourth degree and violating conditions of release of a felony charge.
Richard W. Richter, 49, was charged Monday with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence.
Christopher P. Gorup, 43, was charged early today with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence.
In Court
Moses J.A. Jarquin, 19, was sentenced to 30 days, suspended, for violating release conditions. He is to seek counseling, and will be on probation for a year. Charges of theft and minor consuming were dismissed.
