Scientists in Schools
Dear Editor: We wish to thank Mt. Edgecumbe High School and the Sitka School District.
The Sitka Sound Science Center is grateful for the cooperative effort from your staff that made for another triumphant year for our Scientists in the Schools program during Sitka Whalefest.
Scientists in the Schools connects visiting, world-class scientist to Sitka School District and Mt. Edgecumbe students throughout the year and especially during Sitka Whalefest. As you may know Sitka Sound Science Center now runs the Sitka Whalefest symposium, and the Scientists in the Schools program.
The success of Scientists in the Schools is due in large part to your staff which is willing to work in special guests and pre-lessons which help meet State science standards. This year scientists did special curriculum and age appropriate activities in science classrooms from sixth grade to 12th grade, engaged Keet and Blatchley students through a Meet the Scientist program, symposium lectures, and encouraged high school students to pursue careers in science fields. We were thrilled to see so many students attend this year’s symposium.
The Scientists in Schools program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, through the University of Alaska-Southeast. We are excited to continue our partnership with Mt. Edgecumbe High School and the Sitka School District in the future, as the program continues throughout the academic year. Karen Jones and Marilyn Guhl are the education coordinators for K-5 classes. Steve Lewis is the education coordinator for the 6-12 grades. Please know that we are sincerely grateful for the enthusiasm and support from your incredibly dedicated teachers.

Prayer for Philippines
Dear Editor: The Christian Churches of Sitka deeply grieve the devastation and loss in the Republic of the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda).
We not only pray for all those who were in the path of the storm but we also stand in support of those within our own community whose loved ones and friends have been affected by the storm.
On Sunday, Nov. 17, there will be an ecumenical candlelight prayer service at 5 p.m. The whole community of Sitka is invited to join our neighbors, friends and co-workers at the Crescent Harbor shelter.
Contact information for various relief agencies will be provided. Bringing light refreshments to share is encouraged.
