Chili Cook-Off
Dear Editor: St. Gregory’s Catholic Church’s Alaska Day annual chili cook-off was a great success. We had 12 wonderful entries and all were enjoyed to the very last spoonful. Our judges and the popular vote had quite a challenge. The popular vote and that of the judges mirrored except that of honorable mention in which we had a tie.
The winners are: first place, Peg Shea and Pete Jurczak; second, Justin Thornton; third, Kim Crews; Honorable Mention Judges vote Matt Stroemer and Popular vote Deanna and Lee Bennett.
I would like to thank our judges Tod Simenson, Jennifer Everly and Colin Annesley. This was the best five dollars in town on Alaska Day for great chili and corn bread. Come see us next year.

Lutheran Pies
Dear Editor: What a pie sale! Women of Sitka Lutheran Church are in awe at the support from the public on Alaska Day. We want to thank the makers/donators of the pies and desserts, the workers setting up, serving, cleaning up, and the customers.
The funds will be used to further the missions of Sitka Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. We apologize that we ran out of pies before everyone had a chance to have some. Hope for more next year.
Thank you and God bless!

Many Thanks
Dear Editor: Thank you so much for all your wishes for recovery and wellness. Every wish, e-mail, photo, story, has been so appreciated while I recover so far away from home.
I will be home soon and back at Sitka High. The best part has been to know how much our wonderful town embraces you when you are away. It is also wonderful to have great teachers, staff, assistant principal, district office, school board and, of course, fun students to know everything is fine. A mobile app to watch state swim results is the best. Go Wolves!
I certainly know this Thanksgiving how I am giving thanks for all of you and especially the students at Sitka High School. Best wishes to all of you for a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope to see you all at the Holland America Tournament, if not before.
Dr. PJ Ford Slack,
Sitka High School Principal
Winter Coat Drive
Dear Editor: Girl Scout Troop 4140 would like to thank everyone who helped kick off their second annual winter coat drive at the Elks Lodge on Sunday, Nov. 10.
We would especially like to thank John Stein who did an amazing job as our auctioneer, Kenny, Steve, Lloyd and the rest of the Elks cook crew for a great dinner, the current and former Girl Scouts who joined us, along with our friends and family who supported us with donations and purchasing the amazing desserts.
The winter coat drive will finish up on Saturday, Nov. 16, with the food drive, so there is still time to go through those closets and find those items that you never use. Drop-off locations are Sea Mart, AC Lakeside, City Hall and the Fire Department. For pick-up, please call 738-2073.

Swim Team Benefit
Dear Editor: Recently, the Sitka High School swim team held its annual prime rib fundraising dinner. This is a fun event that could not happen without the support, generosity and behind-the-scenes work of a long list of folks.
Thank you to John Wathen, who ordered the food. Our volunteer chef Lupita from Mt. Edgecumbe High School, who put in a long day and prepared an amazing meal of salad, bread, prime rib, vegetable medley, potatoes and gravy. Desserts were provided by swim parents and coffee from Common Grounds.
Thank you to our emcee, Tim Doggett, who always goes above and beyond! The money raised from this event comes from ticket sales as well as a raffle, silent auction and labor auction.
These things could not happen without the generous donations from our community-minded merchants. Thank you never feels like enough but it is a place to start.
Thank you VERY much to Sea Mart, Harris Air, State farm Insurance, Venneberg Insurance, Brenner’s Fine Clothign and Gifts, Stereo North, Silver Basin, Highliner Coffee, the BackDoor, Old Harbor Books, Sitka Flowers and Chocolate Moose, Sitka Sound Seafoods, Seafood Producers Cooperative, AC Lakeside, Mountain Miss, Petro Marine, Seaside Barbership, Aurora Business Supplies, Knitting with Class, The Cellar, Hair Loft, Robert Miller at Sea Fur Sewing, Yellow Jersey Cycle Shop, Pizza Express, Agave Restaurant, TMW, Sitka Bazaar, Bayview Pub, Linda Fader, Nikki McArthur, Jennifer Davis, Spenard Builders Supply, Home Plus, Hair Play, Sitka Dental Clinic, Work and rugged Gear and Fisherman’s Eye Gallery.
Thank you to the parents of these swim kids who work hard to make this event happen and all the folks who come to show their support, enjoy an incredible meal and help make this unique way of competing possible by helping us raise the necessary funds.
This has been an outstanding swim season, I could not be more proud of these kids. They worked hard, put in long hours and supported each other. We have just returned from the state meet in Juneau where Sitka took second for the third year in a row to Dimond High School swim and dive team from Anchorage with a student body of over 1,600. Although we took only eight kids to state (seven boys and one girl) and had six swimmers final – five boys and Megan Reid – it took the entire team of 19 swimmers to get us there.
The swim season is a short and intense three months with a lot of ferry and plane travel, hotel and housing stays. Although travel with 19 kids has its challenges, these kids make it easy with their behavior. I have received compliments from every place we have traveled about how Sitka kids are the best in Southeast. I think so too.

Thanks, Emblem Club
Dear Editor: On behalf of the Marine Corps League of Sitka, Robert B. Johnstone Detachment, I wish to convey a sincere appreciation and thank you to the Sitka Emblem Club. The decoration in the Agave Restaurant for the Marine Corps 238th birthday celebration certainly made the occasion festive and meaningful. Not only did the club decorate the venue, they also bought and delivered the beautiful birthday cake that is part of any birthday gathering but an especially significant part of the Corps’ tradition. We appreciate the time, resources and effort exerted to celebrate this very special day in our Marine Corps history.
