Charging Stations

Dear Editor: George Eliason’s letter on Friday made some excellent points. I’m writing this letter as an electric vehicle owner in Sitka.

The thought that the city should provide charging stations for electric vehicles in a town that has 14 miles of primary roads seems, at the very least, to be ridiculous. A little planning and forethought by EV owners makes charging stations unneeded. Charging stations are not necessary here and certainly shouldn’t be financed using taxpayers money.

A positive way for the city to be involved in the changeover to electric vehicles is to purchase electric cars for use by staff.

Shoebox Project

Dear Editor: We wish to extend a warm thank you to the generous donors to Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child shoebox project this year: The Hames Corporation, Theresa Helem, Sitka True Value, Dirk and Trish White, and the Alaska Computer Center.

Thank you also to all the folks at Sitka Christian Center, Calvary Chapel Sitka, and Grace Harbor who packed their own boxes or donated items.

These donated school supplies, hygiene items, toys, coloring books, small articles of clothing, hairbrushes and hair accessories, art supplies, small tools, etc. were packed into shoeboxes and taken to AML who once again graciously provided shipping to Juneau for the 161 shoeboxes that Sitka collected this year!

In Juneau all the shoeboxes from Southeast Alaska will be gathered together and shipped to Seattle for distribution worldwide.

In addition to receiving a Christmas shoebox – a first for many recipients – kids ages 2-14 will be introduced to Jesus, our reason for the season. To learn more about this project, search online for Operation Christmas Child. You can pack a box online.

Thank You, SEARHC

Dear Editor: I would like to express gratitude for SEARHC and the Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center here in Sitka for their ongoing response to the COVID pandemic. SEARHC has provided accurate information about COVID and convenient COVID testing to Sitka and many other communities in Southeast Alaska.

SEARHC helped with the rapid rollout of COVID vaccines early this year and continues to host frequent vaccine and booster shot clinics. They have made it easy and convenient to get vaccinated for both COVID and the flu.

I especially appreciate the folks who answer the SEARHC COVID Hotline. Every time I have called they clearly answered my questions and helped alleviate any concerns I had. Resources like this are so important to our community as a whole.

Thanks to all those at SEARHC who coordinate the pandemic response, run vaccine clinics, answer the COVID Hotline and provide care to patients.
