Invest in Young Growth
Dear Editor: This coming week Sitka will host the Tongass Advisory Committee whose task as given by the U.S. Forest Service is to “develop recommendations on forest management on the Tongass with an emphasis on young-growth management.’’
Kudos that local people will get to help make this decision. My two bits are – that there be no more old-growth logging starting tomorrow. An example of harvesting second-growth in Oregon’s Siuslaw National Forest averages 40 million board feet of second-growth per year and has not had any litigation in over 20 years. I know we don’t care how they do it down south, but this may be worth considering.

No Malaria
Dear Editor: Every year 655,000 people die from malaria, a preventable and treatable disease transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. Imagine No Malaria is an initiative of the United Methodist Church to raise $75 million to end preventable deaths from malaria in Africa by 2015.
The United Methodist Church of Sitka is joining this initiative by educating, informing, and asking the community to help us by donating on line at ImagineNoMalaria.org and by finding our booth at the Holiday Bazaar at the Centennial Building, Saturday, Nov. 29. Come by for information and an opportunity to be a part of this effort.
