Educators Celebrated

Dear Editor: We recently celebrated educators for the day, as part of our American Education Week celebration. This program allows individuals from the community to experience a school day with help from the teacher. This enhances communication between educators and community leaders. This would be a good time to invite School Board members, PTA members, police officers, firefighters, senior citizens, and business people, to name a few.

One example of this is when members of the Coast Guard come in and read with our elementary children during Dr. Seuss Day, or they bring in Coastie, the talking Coast Guard boat, to teach the children about water safety.

During the Whale Festival, community members join Don Sineti to sing sea chanties, and conduct whale feeding experiments with the kids.

We have a very diverse community here in Sitka with plenty of people willing to share their expertise in their field!
