Thank You Month
Dear Editor: this pandemic has been ugly – but way less so living in Sitka than for others. Even at the most locked down people could walk in the fresh air (and occasionally sunshine).
Perhaps most importantly we have an army of people working together to keep us all healthy – doctors are largely identified, the janitors and aides not so much. A team of (I assume) women made over a thousand masks. Another group saw to it that people could get groceries.
Thank you, one and all.

Gratitude
Dear Editor: In this month of gratitude, I am writing to thank all the organizations who have chosen to make public acknowledgments of the Tlingit people’s stewardship of this spectacular place. Rather than choosing to exclude our friends and neighbors from the story of Sheetʼká (known more recently as ‘‘Sitka’’ and also ‘‘Novoarkhangelsk’’) these organizations recognize that it starts thousands of years before written records begin.
I am so grateful for this leadership – most recently shown by the Assembly members of the City and Borough of Sitka – and dedicate this expression of gratitude to this growing body of leaders in social and racial justice.
With respect, and thanks, to all who have supported this important project,
Leah Mason, Sitka
