Sesquicentennial

Dear Editor: Alaska Day and the sesquicentennial has come and gone, but … if you still have interest in the speakers who presented, here is second chance. 

The Sitka Historical Society and Sitka National Historical Park presented 17 speakers on a variety of topics. The speakers and topics were: Ana Ditmar, ‘‘The Story of St. Michael’s Cathedral Russian Icon Collection’’; Dave McMahan and Bob Sam, ‘‘The Final Story of the Neva Survivors Camp’’;  Father Michael Oleksa, ‘‘Six Saints of Sitka, Sitka has more saints than any other city in the United States’’; Tamie Parker Song, ‘‘The Necessity of Truth in Reconciliation’’; Steve Haycox, ‘‘150th 101’’;  Mike Dunham, ‘‘The Four Emancipators’’; Terrence Cole, ‘‘The Leutze painting of the Treaty of Cession’’; Captain Chip Lewin, ‘‘U.S. Coast Guard History’’; Rebecca Poulson, ‘‘Origins of the Sitka Mission’’; Margan Grover and Dan Thompson,  ‘‘People and Stories of Castle Hill: At the Intersection of Archaeology, History and Global Networks’’; Alexis Liberovsky, archivist of the Orthodox Church in America, ‘‘Russian Orthodox Church and Interactions with U.S. Presidents 1867 to 1917’’; Chris Allan, ‘‘Destination-Sitka: Special Correspondents and the Scramble to Report on the 1867 Transfer of Russian America to the United States’’; Pat Heuer, certified silviculturist, interpretive hike part way up the Mt. Verstovia Trail to look at and discuss Russian clear cuts and charcoal pits; Harvey Brandt and Mike Morris, ‘‘The Ice Business’’; Anne Pullnow,  ‘‘Linking Local Archaeological Finds and Tlingit Oral History Prior to Russian Contact’’; Jenya Anichenko, ‘‘Love at the Time of Russian America’’; and Bob Sam, ‘‘Sitka Cemeteries’’.
